Coconut Sugar Body Scrub

Sugar Body Scrub

So after a few consecutive breakfast posts, I promised you a break. And I deliver. Today’s post is not breakfast, nor is it lunch and not even dinner. This post is actually first of a healthy and sustainable homemade beauty and cleaning series I would like to start on here. Let’s kick off with Coconut Sugar Body Scrub, it could not be easier and quicker and your skin will feel fabulous afterwards.

When I went vegan almost 5 years ago, I only started with food and eating habits. I was still wearing leather and buying conventional beauty and cleaning products which were tested on animals and incredibly harmful on the environment. However, as I started reading more books/articles and finding out what goes on in the production of these and all the toxic ingredients the conventional beauty and cleaning products contain, I slowly started to come away from them.

Since the skin is our largest organ and whatever we put on it will be absorbed, I was shocked at the effects of some of the ingredients in the conventional beauty and cleaning products. Toxins and chemicals deemed as carcinogens, linked to hormone disruption, reproductive problems and organ toxicity amongst other issues were in every single brand I was using. And the problem is not only that they’re going into our bodies, they are afterwards being washed out into our rivers, seas and oceans and causing an enormous amount of pollution to the aquatic life. And that’s not even mentioning the plastic microbeads which are part of most of the scrubs as well as other beauty products and go down the drain by the billions every day. On their way out to sea they absorb toxins in the water and are then eaten by the fish, which, if you eat fish, will then end up on your plate.

This wasn’t really something I wanted to carry on contributing to, so I took little steps to be more sustainable and more compassionate with our Mother Earth. Of course, this process wasn’t done in a day, it took me months to slowly research, start going over to more sustainable and organic brands and then actually trying my hand at homemade. I couldn’t believe how easy, effective and planet-friendly most of the DIY beauty and cleaning products are. There are now only a couple of things I still buy, but my body scrub, moisturiser (hello wonderful coconut oil :), hair mask, washing and dishwasher tabs, fabric softener and many other things are exclusively homemade and all work great, smell great and the best of all, they’re made out of ingredients you could eat, so no harm to any animals or our wonderful planet. And as an added bonus, they normally cost a fraction of what you’d spend buying them.

So, not to scare you, just in case you think you need a lab coat or a witch’s cauldron (no worries, you won’t need either), I thought I would start with an extremely easy, effective and wonderfully-smelling recipe. This Coconut Sugar Body Scrub takes all of 3 minutes to make just by combining 3 ingredients and you’re ready for extremely soft, silky and coconutty smelling skin. The sugar is a great exfoliant and the coconut oil will leave a silky feel on your skin. If you’re not too keen on the coconut smell, extra virgin olive oil works just as well. I’ve used both and I’ve loved both, but for me, the coconut smell wins every time, hands down! Also, in case you’re a strict vegan, you can leave the honey out and the scrub will still work great. I chose to include it because of its wonderful antibacterial and antiseptic properties and because it is full of antioxidants.

So, it really is as simple as that, mix, step into the shower, scrub and step out as a new person 🙂 Ok, maybe not new, but definitely with a lovelier renewed skin.

The amount in my recipe will make enough for 4 – 6 uses, so store it in a sealed glass jar and make sure not to splash warm water into it, otherwise the sugar will melt. Or you can just make a quarter of the recipe each time for a single use.

Also, just a couple of notes here, once you’ve scrubbed, you will feel a little greasy, but don’t wash it off with body wash/soap. Just gently pat your skin dry with a towel and let it absorb all the wonderful coconut oil. And also, a little health & safety 😀 The coconut oil will make your shower/bath a little slippery, so be careful not to slip.

Happy scrubbing!
